MC Sports - A soft spot for sports

MC Sports’ history began in 1946, when Jack Finklestein opened Michigan Clothiers in Grand Rapids, MI. Its name reflected the extensive inventory the store carried, from menswear to war surplus items. The store was highly popular among locals, especially its sports-related products, that by 1961 the company renamed itself to MC Sporting Goods and focused solely on sports apparel, equipment and footwear. The following years proved to be very successful, marked by in-state and out-of-state expansion. In 1986, the firm was sold to Thrifty Corp., a thriving company that helped facilitate further expansion and the acquisition of chains Morrie Mages’ Sports and Browns Sporting Goods. In 1992, Thrifty Corp. was bought out by Leonard Green & Partners, and only in 1996 did the retailer’s senior management successfully buy the company back. Today, MC Sports is one of the last remaining privately held sporting goods chains that still successfully operates 74 stores in seven states across the Midwest.
