Survival gear and navigation items like compasses and survival knives are sold, along with two-way radios, crank-powered flashlights and GPS units. Other hunting equipment includes decoys, scents and optics. An array of firearms for hunting and shooting purposes are also sold, along with ammunition, gun storage and maintenance products. Fishing rods, reels and tackle are sold in the fishing department, along with ice fishing gear. A boating section carries everything from life jackets to anchoring and docking gear. The camping department offers tents and sleeping bags, as well as camp furniture and outdoor cooking supplies. There is an automotive section that offers generators, radar detectors and garage products. Camouflage, hunting and fishing apparel is sold for men, women and kids. A variety of athletic footware is also featured, including hiking boots, snowshoes and swim shoes.

Cabela's was founded in 1961 by Dick and Jim Cabela in Chappell, Nebraska. Store locations are set up like outdoor showrooms, featuring taxidermied wildlife, indoor mountains and airplanes suspended from the ceiling. The retailer went public in 2004, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol CAB. The retailer is headquartered in Sidney, Nebraska and employs over 14,000 people nationwide as of 2012. The current CEO of the company is Thomas Millner, and there are 40 stores in 27 states, three of which are in Canada. The retailer earned over $2 billion in 2010. Many locations feature restaurants inside, and the brand recently produced two television programs called "Cabela's Memories in the Field" and "Cabela's Outfitter Journal". These shows were aired on the Outdoor Channel. The retailer has also produced video games with hunting themes.
