Big 5 Sporting Goods was founded in 1955 by Maurie and Harry Liff and Robert Miller. The company got its start with five stores in San Jose, Burbank, Los Angeles, Glendale and Inglewood California under the name "Big 5 Stores." The original items sold included surplus items from the U.S. Army, as well as camping supplies and tools manufactured by the retailer. In 2002 the company went public and, as of 2013, operates 414 locations in 12 western U.S. states. The current CEO is Steven Miller, son of founder Robert Miller. The company grossed over $890 million dollars in 2011 and employs approximately 9,500 people nationwide.
