Sur La Table was founded in 1972 by Shirley Collins in Seattle, Washington in the Pike Place Market. The company was sold to Investcorp in 1995 and the current CEO is Jack Schwefel. Since 2005, the retailer has been named the second largest retailer of specialty cookware in the U.S. A number of store locations offer cooking lessons to teach kitchen techniques and sell inventory. The company published its first book, "Things Cooks Love" in 2008. There are over 100 locations as of 2013. The company remains headquartered in Seattle, Washington.
