Shopko - High quality merchandise at great values
Shopko is a privately-owned retail store chain based in Green Bay, WI. It operates under three divisions: Shopko, Shopko Hometown and Shopko Express Rx. The company offers a wide range of quality name-brand merchandise in the home, bed and bath, and electronics categories, with an eye on high-margin items like casual apparel for men, women and children. Pharmacy and eye care services are also typically provided in stores, cementing its emphasis on retail health. The Hometown division, which is about three times smaller than a regular Shopko, caters to smaller communities and carries 70% of the usual inventory. Shoppers can take advantage of their My Extra Savings program to receive extra cash coupons. The company maintains distribution centers and eye care centers in Idaho, Nebraska and Wisconsin. In its hometown of Green Bay, walk-in clinics called FastCare can be found through partnerships with local hospitals. Gift cards are also available for purchase.
Shopko - A retail chain with a focus on health
What began in Green Bay, WI as a store founded by Chicago pharmacist James Ruben in 1962 has transformed into a retail chain that generates annual sales of over $3 billion. The company’s focus on health was strong and evident from the beginning, becoming one of the first retailers to incorporate eye care and pharmacy services in-store. By 1971, it had merged with SuperValu, an American food retailer. In 1991, it became a publicly held company, only to be bought by an affiliate of the investment group Sun Capital Partners in 2005, which reverted it to private ownership. Today, the company employs more than 19,000 employees and operates more than 300 stores in 21 states across the Midwest, Mountain, Pacific, Northwest and Southern regions.
