Restoration Hardware was founded in 1979 by Stephen Gordon in Eureka, California. The first store was based in the founder's home and grew to 47 store locations by the time it went public in 1998. The company is headquartered in Corte Madera, California and employs over 1,500 people full-time. The retailer owns and operates 74 galleries and 13 outlet stores, as of April 2013. Store locations are present in 30 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Canada. They grossed over $700 million in revenue in 2008. Gary Friedman served as the company's CEO from 2001 to 2012, when Carlos Alberini assumed leadership of the retailer.
