Piggly Wiggly - Weird name, serious company
Piggly Wiggly is a family-owned and operated chain of grocery stores headquartered in Keene, New Hampshire. The first store was opened in 1916 by Clarence Saunders in Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to the company's existence, it was customary for grocery shoppers to give their list to a store clerk who would then gather the items from the store's shelves and package everything up. The company was the first grocery retailer in the U.S. to abandon this practice in favor of self-service shopping. The retailer was the first in the U.S. to implement checkout stands, mark the prices of in-store items and use refrigerated cases. Today Piggly Wiggly has over 600 stores in 17 states.
