Neiman Marcus - luxury when it matters
Neiman Marcus was founded in 1907 by Herbert Marcus with his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman and her husband A.L. Neiman in Dallas, Texas. They decorated and stocked the store in a more extravagant and expensive manner than was usual in Texas at that time and it was an instant success among the rich of the south who relished the New York fashions and lifestyle that the Neimans brought to their stores. Initially the focus was on women's apparel but in 1914 the store expanded its selection to also include children's clothing, lingerie and accessories. In 1927 they became the first retail store to give a weekly fashion show in the United States. Mensware was also offered in stores from 1929, and lines of less expensive clothing hit the shelves in response to public demand. It continued to increase its products and number of stores well into the 21st century and is now owned by Ares Management and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Buro.
