Menards – Family-owned since 1960
Menards was founded by John Menard, Jr. in 1960. The founding of the company came after John's four successful years as a local contractor in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where he build post-frame buildings. These were a cheap and convenient way to provide shelter for agricultural stock and machinery, whose raw building materials and post-frame structures became highly requested items by his customers. And so John Menard, Jr. started to sell lumber and other construction materials. In 1972, the first Menards hardware store was opened and since then, the chain has expanded to over 300 retail locations across 14 states in the Midwest. Menards continues to be family-owned and is still headquartered in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
