Lowes Foods – Southern supermarkets since 1954
Lowes Foods was founded in Wilkesboro, North Carolina by Jim Lowe in 1954. During the following decades, the chain began to expand throughout the western mountain region of North Carolina and South Carolina. In 1984, Lowes Foods became part of the Merchants Distributors, Inc. family and opened almost 20 more stores during the 1980s. During the 1990s, Lowes introduced FreshSmart stores with improved freshness and customer service, all in response to the changing demands of customers. Today, the company is headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and consists of over 100 stores across the Carolinas and Virginia, with over 8,000 employees.
