Lowe's - Home and construction supplies since 1946
Lowe's was founded in 1946 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina by Lucius Lowe. In 1952, Carl Buchan, Lowe's brother-in-law and partner, bought the company and wanted to expand and create a chain of hardware stores. The company's business started to really become successful after WWII was over, with an increasing housing and construction boom. With business booming and being able to expand from profits, by 1962 the company operated 21 stores. Due to successful strategy and acquisitions the company expanded nationally over time. Originally, the owners wanted to keep stores small, as mom and pop stores, but due to big competition, Lowe's expanded into the mega store market in the 1980's. Today, the company operates over 1,700 locations nationally and in Canada and Mexico. Lowe's has over 248,000 employees and in 2012 had a net revenue of 50.2 billion dollars.
