Lane Bryant - An American brand since 1904
Lane Bryant was founded in 1904 by Lena Bryant in New York City. Lena started by making lingerie for women, but eventually expanded to making maternity dresses. The maternity dresses were some of the first to the market and catered to the middle class woman to poorer women who had to work through their pregnancy. Through various testing and sizing comparisons, Lena and her husband, who she married in 1909, decided to branch out from the "ideal body" to women with an "ample body," since they made up half of the population. The store was a big success and the first branch store opened in 1915 in Chicago. Today the company has over 800 stores in 46 states, with an annual net sales in 2012 of $120 million.
