Jewel-Osco – Illinois-based since 1899
The history of Jewel-Osco began all the way back in 1899, when Frank Vernon Skiff started his door-to-door coffee delivery service in Chicago, Illinois. By the 1920s, the company had built a new office, and its own warehouse and coffee roasting facilities in the Chicago suburbs, creating local jobs during the Great Depression. Over the course of the 20th century, Jewel-Osco began to absorb and acquire local grocery chains, creating rapid expansion in retail presence across the midwestern United States. The first store named “Jewel-Osco” opened in 1961 and today, the grocery chain consists of over 180 stores with around 45,000 employees.
