J. Jill - Family roots
J. Jill was founded by Carl and Mary Ann Lipsky in 1959, originally called Jennifer House after their first daughter. The birth of their second daughter, Jill, led to catalogs being named after both daughters. DM Management bought J. Jill in 1987 and the company went public in 1993. In 2006, the retailer was acquired by Talbots, Inc., who sold it to Golden Gate Capital in 2011, who retain ownership of the company today. Today the retailer owns and operates over 200 store locations and is headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts. Approximately 1,600 people are employed by the retailer, and Paula Bennett is the current CEO.
