IKEA – Swedish origins, global reach
IKEA was founded in 1943 by 17-year old Ingvar Kamprad in his small village in southern Sweden. The name “IKEA” comes from his initials (I.K.), the name of his farm (Elmtaryd), and the name of his village (Agunnaryd). The first IKEA store originally sold pens, wallets, and stockings but later expanded to sell furniture during the 1950s. The first IKEA store outside of Sweden opened in 1963 in Oslo, Norway, while the first IKEA store in the United States opened in 1985 outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today, there are over 35 IKEA stores in the U.S., each with over 30,000 square feet of retail space and located near major metropolitan areas.
