Hannaford – Maine-based since 1883
Hannaford was founded by Arthur Hannaford in 1883 as a small produce store on the Portland, Maine waterfront. By 1902, Arthur and his brothers, Howard and Edward, had established the Hannaford Bros. Company, which would become one of northern New England's biggest produce retailers by the 1920s. The company completed a shift from wholesale goods to consumer retail goods during the 1950s and has continued to develop their business model and expand geographically since then. Today, Hannaford is headquartered in Scarborough, Maine, has over 170 retail locations across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York, and employs over 26,000 workers. Hannaford also continues to maintain close ties with local communities, including a partnership with the United Way, that has existed since 1929.
