Giant Eagle - A family owned supermarket since 1931
Giant Eagle can trace its beginnings to 1918 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when three families, the Goldstein, Porter and Chait families, started a small grocery store called Eagle Grocery. The store became very successful and expanded into 125 stores, but was sold to the Kroger Company in 1928. In 1931, the families joined two other families, the Moravitz's and Weizenbaum's, and established the Giant Eagle grocery store in Pittsburgh. Over the years, the company grew by acquiring other companies, innovating, and by simplifying grocery shopping. Today there are 218 supermarket locations with over 36,000 employees, and net sales in 2012 of $9.9 billion.
