Foodtown - A supermarket cooperative
Foodtown is a supermarket cooperative headquartered in Avenel, NJ, with stores in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. All 59 Foodtown stores - 19 in NJ, 33 in NY and 7 in PA - are independently owned and operated. The co-op also produces store-brand items, which it distributes to other independent grocery stores. With a mission to become the best grocery retailer in its market, Foodtown focuses on high quality and freshness, friendly customer service and customer rewards to achieve its goal. From beauty items and home essentials to deli delights and produce staples, most products can be purchased both in-store and online, and frequent shoppers can take advantage of the store’s free Club Card for automatic discounts.
Foodtown - A different kind of supermarket
Foodtown was founded in 1955 and was once a major player in Long Island, NY and New Jersey. The brand grew in the 1980s and the 1990s, with Mayfair Supermarkets and Melmarkets as the two largest members of the cooperative. The co-op experienced major change in 1995, when 45 of its New York stores were sold to Royal Ahold, a Dutch retailer. Today, Foodtown maintains its presence in NY, NJ and PA, as well as its own store-name brand. Its distinguishing trait from other grocery retailers is that its stores are uniquely independently owned and operated - a cooperative in the truest sense of the word. Foodtown employs around 50 employees and reports annual revenues of around $17 million from its 59 stores.
