Food City was founded in 1918 when the first store was opened in Greeneville, Tennessee. There are 75 pharmacy locations as well as 56 gas stations. The retailer partners with farmers from Tennessee and Virginia to provide local produce where available. The company is also a regular sponsor of NASCAR, and is the second longest running company to sponsor the racing giant. There is one distribution center in Abingdon, Virginia that occupies 1.1 million square feet. The retailer offers its employees a profit sharing plan, whereby 14% of the company is controlled by its associates. In 2007, the retailer earned over $1 billion in revenue.
