Dollar Tree was founded in 1953 by K.R. Perry in Norfolk, Virginia, originally with the name Ben Franklin Variety Store. The first store with the "$1 for everything in store" was launched in 1986. At that time it was called Only $1, and had five locations the same year. The retailer adopted its curent brand name in 1993, and became publicly traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol DLTR in 1995. The company opened its first distribution center in Chesapeake, Virginia in 1997. Bob Sasser is the current CEO of the company, who assumed leadership in 2004. The 3,000th store was opened in 2006 and reached 4,000 stores by 2010.
