Dillard's was founded in 1938 in Nashville, Arkansas by William Dillard. Through effective advertising, Dillard grew his brand. By the 1960s, the company had moved into Texas, and started acquiring other stores to move into other states. The strategy was to offer attractive priced, national brand name merchandise and allow customers to pay with credit. With this successful strategic approach, Dillard's expanded nationally through acquisitions up through the 1990s. Since then, the company has focused on strategic buys and in store marketing. Today, Dillard's has over 300 stores in 29 states, and in 2011 reported net sales at $6.3 billion.
