D&W Fresh Market - Where great meals start
One could say "great meals have started here" since 1943. Founded by Roy Woodrick and Sid DeVries in the early '40s, the first D&W Fresh Market opened in Grandville, Michigan. At the time, the store operated as an Independent Grocery Association (IGA) retail grocery store but by the early sixties, Woodrick and DeVries had created a new corporation - D&W - and designed the company's famous heart logo. At its peak, D&W numbered 27 stores in West Michigan. In December 2005, Spartan Stores, later to become SpartanNash after a merger with the Nash Finch Company, purchased the 20 stores the company still operated and promised to retain the D&W name due to its heritage and recognition. Under SpartanNash, a Fortune 500 company and the largest food distributor serving military commissaries, the D&W name now operates under an umbrella of stores like Econofoods, No Frills and Sun Mart just to name a few.
