Crate & Barrel - Since the 1960s
Crate & Barrel was launched by Gordon and Carole Segal in Chicago in 1962. Started in an elevator factory on Wells Street, the couple stocked their first store by buying directly from European craftsman. They stacked items on their shipping crates and held random items inside the shipping barrels, which gave the retailer their name. Since then, the company has grown to 7,000 employees and over 100 stores. They are based in Nothbrook, Illinois and have stores in the U.S., Canada, Dubai and Singapore. In 2008, Barbara Turf replaced founder Gordon Segal as CEO of the company, and Turf was replaced by Sascha Bopp in 2012 upon her retirement.
