Bergner's - Peoria Pride
Bergner's was founded in 1889 in Peoria, Illinois by Peter Alan Bergner. Originally the company was in a large brick building and provided hat manufacturing, shoe repairs, and sold high end china. The department store also had a tea room where customers could sit in and drink tea. Over the years, the company expanded through revenues and acquisitions. In the 1970s and 1980s, the company acquired other department stores, such as Carson Pirie Scott and Boston Store, expanding into Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, and Michigan. This helped Bergner's establish a large Midwest presence. In 2006, the company was bought by Bon Ton for over $1 billion. Today, the company helps contribute to Bon Ton's annual revenue, which in 2011 was $2.8 billion.
