Belk - A southern history
Belk was founded in 1888 in Monroe, North Carolina by William Belk and his brother, John Belk. The company started out as a bargain store with a strategy of fair prices and friendly service. Under Belk's business model, the company began to flourish and began to expand through partnerships and acquisitions. This made the company grow into what it is today; the nation's largest family owned department store. The company is a regional player, and has stayed true to keeping the southern style. Belk operates over 300 locations in 16 of the southern states and employs over 23,000 people. In 2012, the company reported a net sales of $3.7 billion.
