Banana Republic - From travel and safari to upscale casual
Banana Republic was founded in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler in Mill Valley, San Francisco. It was originally known as Banana Republic Travel and Safari Clothing Company. From 1978-1983, the company was the leading retailer for travel and safari wear, and all items were made from natural fibers. In 1983, the store was acquired by The Gap, and in 1988 it shifted from its safari theme towards a more sophisticated, urban look. In 1996, with more than 200 stores throughout the United States and five in Canada, Banana Republic introduced gender-specific concept stores and some locations offered free alterations and personal shopping assistants. Today the store has over 600 company owned or franchised locations in over 30 countries.
