Shoppers know they can count on A&P employees for great customer service and other special services such as check cashing, money transfers, and purchasing and postage stamps. The grocery chain also has a frequent shoppers program called the "my+ Rewards", which provides customers with savings, special offers, and discounts at their local store. Additionally, some stores even offer online shopping with in store pick up or home delivery options.
A&P – Fresh food since 1859
A&P was founded during the 1850s by George Gilman in New York City as Gilman & Company, a successor to his father's leather tanning business. After deciding that he did not want to continue this business, George began a tea and coffee store. The first retail location opened near Wall Street in 1861 and was also operated with a mail order tea and coffee business. After the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S., the name of the company was changed to the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company to reflect a broader market. In 1912, the store became a full grocery store and by 1930, the chain had expanded to 16,000 stores across the country with over $1 billion in annual sales. After some corporate restructuring, A&P continues to exist today as a private company headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey, with over 300 stores and approxmiately 40,000 employees.
