Tips for shopping in Newark
Situated in the Gateway region and sloping toward the Passaic River, Newark is the largest city in New Jersey and a major rail and shipping transportation hub. Founded in 1666, the city is now surrounded by residential suburbs and sits close to the Watchung Mountains. As recently as 1985, the port was the busiest in the world, and the airport remains the second busiest in the New York Area. Several major insurance companies are headquartered in Newark, such as PSEG and Prudential Financial. The city has many sites and attractions of interest to both visitors and locals. Much of the city's most inspiring history can be found in the neighborhood known as Central Ward. Sometimes known as Science Park or the old Third Ward, Central Ward is home to the historic sites of Elberhardt Hall and Krueger Mansion. Downtown Newark is the city's business and retail center, but it's also home to several cultural venues such as the Newark Museum, which is the largest in the state. Head to the intersection of Broad Street and Market Street for one of the busiest retail areas within the city.
