Tips for shopping in Austin
“Keep Austin Weird” is the recently-adopted slogan of Texas' capital city, which also self-styles as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Along with a peculiar sense of uniqueness and independence, music also runs in the veins of the Austinite: a plethora of well-known and lesser-known bands hail from the city, and there are countless live venues, bars, and clubs to discover. The world-famous “Austin City Limits” broadcasts have also featured some of the biggest acts of the last 50 years. The eclectic, young population of Austin makes this city one of the most dynamic and interesting cities in the U.S. Indeed, the city was the fastest-growing urban center between 2000 and 2006, as the population climbed to over 820,000 as of 2011. With this growing notoriety have also come major conferences and events: the massively popular South By Southwest Festival (SXSW) is held in Austin, where the latest music and technology are showcased to an international audience. Austin's shopping scene is dominated by its raft of independently-owned, non-chain shops and boutiques, which are loyally supported by Austin residents. The Second Street District is the focal point for this type of shopping. You can still find national players and retail giants in Austin in places like The Domain, but they'll still be interspersed with Austin-specific brands.
